Le Grand Véfour - Le Grand Véfour has, according to the blurb, been the finest gourmet rendezvous of the Parisian political, artistic and literary society for more than 200 years.
Ô Chateau - wine bar, restaurant, wine lessons, tours. Well located at 68, rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau 75001. Read Olivier Marigny's blog, especially "Stuff Parisians Like" - also published in French as "Dessine-moi un Parisien". Hilarious and insightful. - Café Ladurée - famous for macarons, mais beaucoup des autres choses aussi
- La Mascotte Brasserie Bar - Rue des Abbesses in Montmartre
- La Bonne Franquette - another Montmartre brasserie, close to Place du Tertre, but a vast improvement on the tourist traps you find there. Great service, fab wine list
- Le Clos Bourguignon - traditional brasserie near L'Opera de Paris, comes well recommended
- L'avenue restaurant - good people watching lunch place
- Mama Shelter - looks fun and fabulous; close to Cimitière Père Lachaise
- L'Opera restaurant - fab pre-theatre dining, with a great menu

- La Perle restaurant - scene of the downfall of Christian Dior designer John Galliano
- Brasserie Lipp - oh so traditional!
- Du Pain et Des Idées - stylish bakery near Canal St Martin in the 10th
- Hotel du Nord - historic watering hole in the 10th
- Pink Flamingo Pizza - because sometimes you need comfort food!
- Ice Kube Bar - 1 Passage Ruelle Paris 75018, funky. Annoying website, though.
- Barrio Latino - 46 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, Paris 75012. Salsa anyone?
- Why Bar - 60 Rue Jean Jacques Rousseau, Paris 75001. In the heart of the Bastille district, specialises in cocktails "destructurés" (the elements are separately layered)
- La Batofar - face au 11 quai François Mauriac Paris 75013. On the banks of the Seine. Need we say more?
- Voulez vous diner avec moi ce soir? - a new twist on social networking which mixes travel, cultural exchange, and a home-cooked dinner for visitors to Paris. Read my blog article from October 2011.
Museums and exhibitions
- Musée Carnavalet - for the history of Paris
- Catacombes - a somewhat macabre, but compelling, trip through underground Paris. Tricky for photographs as flash and tripods are not allowed. Strictly limited numbers and you may have to queue for quite a while to get in. Needs a certain amount of stamina - steps up and down, and occasionally slippery paths through the tunnels.
- Centre Pompidou
- Grand Palais - events and exhibitions
- Petit Palais - exhibitions
- Chantal Crousel Gallerie
Scandinavia
- Nordic Visitor - great local travel agency in Scandinavia
- The Nobel Prize - first week in December is Nobel Week in Stockholm and Oslo
